2016 Year-in-Review

Time for the annual yearly round-up…and I gotta say, I really can’t complain about 2016. Ended up cramming a lot of really fun activities in and having a really good time.

January
The biggest event this month was the Bumble Bee ride with Liberty. Even though we ended up pulled for a mystery lameness that had resolved itself by the next morning, I still had a great time and a great ride. Libby is so much fun…I hope I can do more with her in the coming year.

February
AERC Convention in Reno, which involved lots of fun, friends, good food, side of booze, and capped off with a driving tour of Virginia City, which completely ignited the must do this ride fire. Convention is probably one of my favorite work-related things I do every year.

And shortly after Convention, I headed off to the Wickenburg ride. Unfortunately, as a first time ride, it suffered from some growing pains, and Liberty and I got shoved into the deep end of doing 75% of the ride by ourselves, which was a first. Ultimately we finished overtime, but I given what we were up against, I’m pretty circumspect about the whole thing. I look at it as we’re getting all of our crap ironed out and out of the way early on, so once we hit our stride, it’ll be smooth sailing. (So goes the theory at least.)

March
A fairly quiet month, although I did a fun compilation of all of my ride photos. March tends to kick off pony shedding season, which leaves Mimi looking a little bit patchwork-y for a month or so. (And enough hair to survive the Himalayas.)

April
A good time to take advantage of the nice weather and get some trail time in with the dogs. I also lost my mind and signed up for another shot at the Crown King 50k in 2017 (to be joined by one of my BFFs and partner-in-crazy-endurance-activities-crime, Kaity).

May
Kaity and I met up at Groom Creek for a horse camping weekend. It had been ages since we were able to get together without something major like a ride dictating our schedule, so it was fun to be able to stay up late, cook over the campfire, and ride whenever we wanted to. Kaity also kindly picked up Liberty for me on her way through Kingman, so the Big Bay Bombshell and I got to experience our first for-fun camping weekend together. There were some interesting and educational moments and working with Libby outside of a ride environment was a learning experience. The pups also came along and had a blast…Sofie’s first trip with me.

Mimi celebrated her 23rd birthday at the end of the month.

June
I never actually managed to write a post about it, but my dad and I did a road trip with my uncle and cousin up to Zion National Park. We overnighted outside of the North Rim of the Grand Canyon on the drive up, then spent a couple of nights in Zion. The scenery is absolutely stunning, although the weather got insanely hot during the day, so we spent the afternoons literally sitting in the Virgin River to try to stay cool.

July
Tevis month! This year, it was fun and a little more relaxing to not be crewing for any one particular person, so I got to take a lot of photos and just hang out. Riding included from the finish line to Lower Quarry and back, and Cal Loop. (In which I didn’t die and it’s not nearly as scary as I had expected.)

August
I celebrated my birthday month with a ride — the Tahoe Rim 50! Lucy loaned me Roo as a thank you for all of the times I’ve crewed Tevis, and he gave me the best birthday present ever…a ride completion!

Prior to my CA trip, Mimi and I headed up to higher elevations and cooler climates for a day ride on the Rim. Little pony is always so happy to get out and is good as gold even when it’s been months since she’d been out.

September
Back into the running habit with another run at the Javelina Jangover 7k. I ran with a buddy of mine on her first trail race and we had a blast.

October
Mimi and I celebrate our 20th anniversary! (Seriously, talk about your long-term relationship…)

I love my pony even more now than the day I got her.

Sofie has her 5th birthday, and her one year Gotcha Day! Love my sweet mama dog and so happy to have her as part of the family. She’s added a whole new element to the household and I couldn’t imagine two dogs who better complement and counter each other.

November
Artemis’s Gotcha Day…three years now of my wild and crazy sweet girl!

Pups and I did a 5k Trail Turkey Trot for fun on Thanksgiving morning.

December
Not sure what the last few weeks of the year have in store, but I love this time of year, am feeling particularly cheerful and Christmas-y  this year, and am curious to see what 2017 will bring.

Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving, all! May the turkey be moist, the gravy non-lumpy, the pie plentiful, and the alcohol readily available. Said with affection, good humor, and tongue firmly in cheek. ;)

My pies are done and packed up, ready to head over to the family gathering later this afternoon.

pumpkin and apple…both homemade from scratch, including crust. I have a soft spot for pie baking.

This morning, the pups and I headed out bright and early for the unofficial Aravaipa Thanksgiving Trail Turkey Trot. We did the 5(ish)k…which turned into 4.3 miles, with some extra bonus miles in there when I sorta missed a turn, headed down a parallel track, decided I didn’t actually know for sure if that parallel track ended up where we needed to be (it did), turned around, and backtracked to the trail split where I had gone the wrong way. Yay, bonus miles! 4.3 miles in 1 hour exactly.

The girls loved getting out on trail again, and although they can be a bit exasperating to run with in trying to get a good rhythm, they are an awful lot of fun, and their enthusiasm is contagious.

This is the second time I’ve done a Thanksgiving morning run (skipped last year, but went with Artemis in 2014, which was the first year for the unofficial race mentioned above), so I guess that now makes it a tradition…can’t say it’s a bad one.

Nothing like catching the most perfect sunrise to start off the morning, and the time out on trail for reflection and thankfulness. Life may not be perfect, but then, it’s not meant to be. It’s fun, it’s messy, it’s a rollercoaster of goods and bads, ups and downs. And it generates an awful lot of stories.

Degrees of Perfect

I doubt there’s such a thing as a truly “perfect” ride, whether it’s an endurance ride, a dressage test, a jumping round, or a schooling session. Every step, every moment, all perfect, nothing out of place? Not exactly realistic…

But degrees of perfect? Moments that end up seared in your brain forever for their feeling of absolute rightness? Those absolutely exist. For me, a good ride is one that leaves at least one of those moments as a permanent impression.

I actually had one of those moments last week riding Mimi. We were just doing some arena work…after almost 20 years, our arena work has become a pretty ho-hum, common-place thing. We both know what we’re supposed to do, but the motivation levels aren’t always there (from either party), and we have nothing to prove.

But I was feeling good after my Tahoe Rim completion (not even sore a week later), and she had obviously missed me after me being gone for a week (ran over to me from the pasture…even after only having been turned out for about 20 minutes before I got there), so things were just working.

We’d only been riding for maybe half an hour at that point, but we hit a moment where she gave me the most perfect trot ever. She was stretchy, balanced, had light contact but self-carriage…and I felt balanced, not fighting her, not flopping around, not a posed mannequin.

We finished our trot circle…and we quit while we were ahead. :) Like I said, nothing to prove anymore…and with a pony who doesn’t exactly love arena work anymore, what she gave me was a gift.

So she got a bath, and a roll in the sand, and a peppermint.

I don’t know when the next time will be I’ll get a moment like that from her, but she’s given me so many good ones along the way, if I take all of those moments and smush them together, they add up to about as close to perfect as a pony can get.

(And I’ve been fortunate enough to have some of these moments with other horses as well. Mimi’s my heart horse, but that doesn’t mean she’s the only one who can make me feel this way.)

Ride Photos

One of my favorite mementos from a ride, beyond t-shirts and buckets and other logo’d items, are ride photos.

If a photo is available, I buy it.There have only been a small number of rides I’ve been to where there has not been a photographer, and as a result, I have an entire album that is filled with photos. It’s one of my prized possessions, kept in an easy-to-grab location, and is worth hundred, if not thousands, of hours of memories.

Just for fun, I thought I would go through and post a photo from each ride that I have…the good, bad, and hilarious, from the beginning (March 2001) up through the most recent ride (Feb 2016).

Between the Pages

I’ve always been a reader. From the time I was an infant, my parents read me books, and for years, my mom and I had a nightly ritual of her reading to me. (And once I learned to read to myself, my insatiable curiosity for wanting to know “what happened next” would have me pulling the book out and reading ahead, and then putting it back for the next night. Not sure if you knew i did that, Mom. ;) And I never got in trouble for doing things like sneaking out to party or staying out too late. No, I got in trouble for sneaking into my closet and staying up late on a school night to read.)

And of course, most of my favorite books involved revolved around horses.

I grew up on Marguerite Henry’s “Misty” books…as well as all of the others she wrote. (Blame King of the Wind for why I love Arabians.) And yes, I also got to go to every little horse girl’s dream vacation destination: Chincoteague.

Despite being a voracious reader, I have a confession to make: I don’t love what is considered “classic” literature. (I fussed and grumbled all throughout high school about having to read things like Dickens, much to my classics-loving best friend’s horror.) My “intellectual guilty pleasure”? Teen/Young Adult fiction. (Not Twilight. It still has to be well-written for me to like it.)

I read just about every YA horse-themed series I could get my hands on, from elementary school all the way through high school, and the only reason I’m not still immersed in them is that I needed more shelf space, so they all sit in boxes in a storage unit, waiting for the day I have an entire room I can convert into a library.

I also re-read, so am loathe to ever get rid of a book unless I really didn’t like it.

At this point, I don’t even remember how many different books/series I read through. Trying to work as best I can off of memory (and Amazon searches) without having to go down to aforementioned storage unit and unearth all those boxes…

My main requisites in what I wanted to read were books that were horse-centric, and the challenges/obstacles/drama presented needed to revovle around the horses…not just “standard issue teenage girl drama that happens to take place in a barn.” (Had enough of that IRL, thank you. I was a pre-teen/teenage girl riding in a competitive show barn. Drama happened.)

I went through the entire Black Stallion series during my lunch hour time my sophomore year of high school (best friend and I didn’t share a lunch hour that year, so I hid out in the library and read).

The Saddle Club series was high up on my list of favorites, and I don’t even know how many of those books I have. (Safe to say, a good part of the series.) This is one series I would like to go back and re-read from an adult perspective…and likely get a good chuckle. Although it’s interesting to see what book memories stay with you — as the series went on, the author started having the girls branch out and dabble in other horse sports, one of which was endurance riding, and a whole book was devoted to their attempt at a 50-miler. I really should pull that particular book out and see how unrealistic it really was. (Although I would have read that book at a time when endurance riding wasn’t even on my radar as a potential sport, so maybe blame it for subconsciously influencing me?)

Author Lauraine Snelling wrote two series that I read: High Hurdles and The Golden Filly. More unusually, they were actually young adult Christian fiction…that revolved around horses. As someone with a Christian upbringing, even at that age, what I appreciated about her books was she was able to share the message without it being too preachy or sanctimonious. Golden Filly was my favorite of the two series, as I had a fascination with the Thoroughbred racing world, largely due to…

My hands-down favorite YA fiction series was the Thoroughbred series. They were one of the first YA fiction series I started reading, and they grabbed me right from the beginning. (Probably largely due to the fact the main character and I shared the same name, albeit a different spelling.) I was about the same age when I started reading these books as the main character (Ashleigh) at the start of the series, and it took no imagination at all for me to become her when I was reading.

This was the last series I eventually stopped buying new books from…I think somewhere around book 60 or so? The series went for 72 books, plus a handful of special editions and a couple of spin-off series. While they’re out of print now, there’s a part of me that wants to grab those last dozen or so books and give them a read-through, just so I can say I read/own the complete series.  However…that will necessitate going down to storage and actually pulling those book boxes, since I don’t remember exactly where I left off, and while some of the book descriptions sound familiar, it’s been long enough that I just can’t be sure if I actually read them or am imagining it.

(Actually, I might go retrieve those books after all…writing this has made me nostalgic, especially for the first dozen+ books of the series, which were written by the original author before she handed over the reins to other authors after book 15. The original ones are still the best.)

These days, I still have my nose buried in a book, and I still stay up too late, trying to finish one last chapter…
